How to Adopt a Dog from Furkids in Atlanta

If you’re a regular reader of the Critter Sitters pet blog, you’ve probably noticed us writing about the Atlanta Humane Society (AHS). AHS is definitely a great resource for pet adoptions, veterinary care, and obedience training classes, but it isn’t the only place you can adopt a dog (or cat) in the Atlanta area. Furkids Animal Rescue & Shelters, which calls itself “Georgia’s Largest Animal Rescue and No-Kill Shelters,” is another excellent place to rescue a shelter dog and give an animal a loving forever home. Our Atlanta dog sitting company explains how to adopt a dog from Furkids, including where the Furkids shelters are located in Georgia, rules and requirements for adopting a pet, and how much dog adoption costs.

Requirements for Adopting a Dog from Furkids Animal Rescue & Shelters

Furkids Animal Rescue & Shelters (which we’ll simply call “Furkids” going forward) is a prominent, reputable animal welfare organization with multiple shelter and adoption locations in the Atlanta area. Similar to AHS, Furkids provides various pet care services, such as spay and neuter, in addition to adopting pets out to loving permanent homes. Both dogs and cats are adoptable from Furkids, though this article will focus on how to adopt a dog or puppy.

The first thing you’ll need to know is where Furkids’ animal shelters are located, and when they’re open. Furkids’ primary dog shelter is located at the following address:

Sadie’s Place
1520 Union Hill Road
Alpharetta, GA 30005

You can schedule an appointment in advance, or simply drop by whenever it’s convenient. The hours of operation for the Union Hill Road dog shelter in Alpharetta are:

  • Wednesday – 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
  • Thursday – 12:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
  • Friday – 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
  • Saturday – 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Hours are subject to change, so it’s a good idea to contact the shelter by calling (678) 624-1003 in advance to confirm.

In addition to the main dog shelter in Alpharetta, Furkids dogs are also available for adoption at the following locations:

City Dog Market
4244 Peachtree Road Northeast
Atlanta, GA 30319

Adoptions at this location are on the last Saturday of each month, 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. (Summer), 12:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. (Winter).

Milton Petco
13089 Highway 9 North
Milton, GA 30004

Adoptions at this location are on the third Sunday of each month, 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Sandy Springs Petco
5938 Roswell Road Northeast
Sandy Springs, GA 30328

Adoptions at this location are on Saturdays, 12:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

You can stop in and be surprised, or browse dogs online through Furkids’ website in advance. To see the dogs Furkids currently has available for adoption, simply visit furkids (dot) org, click the “Dog Adoptions” link in the header, and then click the “Adoptable Dogs” link in the drop-down menu.

The next things you’ll need to know are the basic rules and requirements for adopting a dog from Furkids. The same requirements apply regardless of whether you adopt from a Furkids location in Atlanta, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, or Milton.

In order to adopt a dog from Furkids, in addition to completing the adoption process described below, you must also be least 21 years old. Furthermore, any pets you may currently own need to be (1) spayed or neutered, and (2) up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Assuming you meet these criteria, the Furkids adoption process is just two simple steps:

  1. Complete and submit the Furkids adoption application. The application is an online form at the URL furkids (dot) org (slash) dog (dash) adoptions (slash) application. Alternately, you can visit the Furkids website, click the “Dog Adoptions” link, then click the “Application” link. The application form is fairly detailed, so set aside at least 15 or 20 minutes to complete it thoroughly. Example questions include “How will you confine your new dog to your property (e.g., fence, dog run, stake in ground, leash walk)?” and “Under what circumstances do you feel it is okay to let your dog off leash?”

  2. Wait to be contacted by Furkids. An adoption counselor should get in touch with you within 24 to 72 hours of receiving your completed online application. The counselor might call you or send you an email, so be sure to keep an eye on your phone and inbox. If you don’t receive an email, check your spam folder just in case.

The fee to adopt a dog from Furkids depends on the animal’s age. Adoption prices are as follows, as of March 2017:

  • Puppies (Under 6 Months) – $295
  • Adult Dogs – $275
  • Senior Dogs (8+ Years Old) – Free

Again, it’s a good idea to confirm policies, pricing, and hours with Furkids in advance, as they are subject to change. You can contact Furkids by calling the (678) 624-1003 number listed above, or by sending an email to adopt (at) furkids (dot) org. And remember, if you can’t adopt right now but still want to help out, ask Furkids about fostering a dog, volunteering, or making a donation.
